Technology & Comfort
Our expedition ships have a dynamic positioning mode that allows them to hover in place when anchoring is difficult, providing guests with more comfortable small craft embarkation for excursions. To further enhance guest comfort, our ships feature both fin stabilizers that reduce rolling while sailing and a U-tank stabilizer that reduces rolling by nearly 50% when the ships are stationary.

Our expedition ships are optimally sized for expeditions: small enough to navigate remote areas, yet large enough to provide speed, superior handling, and stability in the roughest seas. This is the latest in our legacy of award-winning ships including our Viking Longships®, built for Europe’s great rivers, and ocean ships, designed to dock in ports where larger ships cannot.

Designed for Views
With more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than other expedition vessels, guests are as close as possible to the most magnificent scenery on earth. Public rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, and the Aula, our panoramic auditorium, offers 270° views. Staterooms are also designed to maximize observation, from our Nordic Balcony Staterooms to Explorer Suites with verandas and gardens.

The Hangar
An industry first, this enclosed in-ship marina permits the launch of small excursion craft through the ship’s slipway. Guests can embark on Special Operations Boats shielded from wind and waves from a flat, stable surface inside the ship and glide into the water to depart on their excursion. They re-enter The Hangar after excursions via the slipway to the protected marina before disembarking their Special Operations Boats.

Special Operations Boats
Our two military grade, 12-seater ice strengthened aluminum, ocean-going Special Operations Boats are built for exploration. With twin water jet propulsion (2 x 450 horsepower onboard engines), individually suspended seats and the unique ability to convert the open seating into an enclosed cabin.

Zodiacs
Designed for professional use in the harshest of environments, our fleet of seventeen Zodiacs with fuel-efficient Yanmar Dtorque 111 engines are reinforced throughout yet stable and comfortable for a day of exploration.

Kayaks
Our nine traditional tandem paddle kayaks offer superb stability and a large, open cockpit for easy accessibility. Built of durable rotomolded polyethylene, these kayaks are equally at home on the Great Lakes and in the Arctic or Antarctica.

Submarines
Our uniquely designed submarines comfortably accommodate 6 guests and a pilot for an incomparable undersea experience. The revolving seats plus nearly 270° spherical windows offer an undistorted view in all directions for every guest.

Before You Go
Before travel, we provide materials to help guests get the most out of their journey, from destination-specific photography advice by professionals to filmographies that inspire wanderlust and recommended reading that enlightens.

On Board
Our enrichment program is designed for the thinking traveler. On board, activities include daily briefings and world-class lectures. Guests can also engage with working scientists in our Science Lab or participate in citizen science programs. On shore, guests can assist in fieldwork or interact through experiential activities, such as helping identify migratory patterns, or accompanying scientists to collect samples.

On Shore
Our shore landings invite guests to engage on a deeper level by assisting in fieldwork or interacting in experiential activities. They might track birds to help identify migratory patterns, walk within view of captivating wildlife, or take a camera or field microscope ashore alongside the expedition leader to capture landscapes untouched by human hands.

Shore Excursions
Viking expeditions offer a variety of excursions so you can experience your destination in the way that most interests you. Virtually all activities are included in your fare in order to ensure you maximize your discoveries. Landings and excursions offer incredible views of remote landscapes and remarkable wildlife, and are led by an experienced team of experts highly skilled in operating in rugged and polar environments.

Citizen Science Program
Science is an important aspect of your experience. Participate in collaborative science during your excursions with experiential activities or fieldwork, facilitated via landings by Zodiac, Special Operations Boat cruising or optional submarine journeys. At Viking, we firmly believe it is important for us to support research efforts and new scientific discoveries, and we provide every opportunity for our guests to further their understanding of the world around them.

The Aula
A stunning panoramic auditorium inspired by the University of Oslo’s famed ceremonial hall, the former venue for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Used for lectures, daily briefings, documentaries and films, this spectacular venue features a 4k laser-projected screen that retracts to expose floor-to-ceiling windows and 270° views.

Expedition Central
The hub for the expedition team to consult with guests on their expedition activities, and share knowledge about the destinations on a one-on-one basis, with the aid of 3D printed maps, digital screens, and a state-of-the-art spatial data visualization chart table.

The Science Lab
Our 380-square-foot wet and dry lab, developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge and Akvaplan-niva, allows our scientists to conduct meaningful research and encourages guest interaction.

The Studio
This onboard area offers a multipurpose space facilitating enrichment experiences with the Viking Resident Scientists. On the wall are felt replicas of the primary avian species that inhabit or migrate to the locations we visit. Here, guests can learn to identify different birds or learn more about their various habits with The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s ornithologists—part of our Viking Resident Scientists program.

Selected by our academic partners, the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute and The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a group of scientists will be on board every journey, providing lectures, advice and insight to guests in areas such as biology, botany, geology, glaciology, oceanography, ornithology.
